Hello! My name is Lorna Anne Tierney and I'm a plant-powered climate activist. I decided to set up The Earthy Marketplace because I believe that Ireland - home of meitheal, has the unique potential to champion sustainable living at a community level in a sincere and meaningful way. We know that we must begin to make some significant changes to combat the climate and ecological emergency and tackling how we consume is right up there near the top. Coming together to support local and sustainable needs to become the new normal and the easier and more accessible that is, the better!

If you’re wondering what on-earth is conscious consumerism? Well, it's simply about making purchasing decisions that have a positive social, economic, and environmental impact. Do you opt for organic items where possible? Or maybe you only use cruelty-free toiletries? Making decisions like these about what you’re going to buy and which type of companies you’re going to support with your money and purchases is known as conscious consumerism.

Our mission is to increase the visibility of and accessibility to businesses that offer conscious purchasing options and/or services. We, at The Earthy Marketplace, are dedicated to promoting a sustainable, ethical lifestyle and fostering a supportive environment for people from all walks of life to come together and make purchasing decisions that will have a positive impact while supporting businesses that care. Although every service and business member featured on TEM is not required to be expressly vegan, we at TEM operate with vegan values at our core. We advocate for the most ethical and sustainable purchasing decisions, and we select businesses that we believe can offer these kinds of products/ services in some capacity.

By supporting businesses like these, you’re also supporting the local community. Buying from a locally owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. Shopping small, sustainable, and local is the act of everyday consumers, like you, making the decision to buy from these businesses instead of going to large retailers. Not to mention you are more than likely directly supporting someone else's dream/passion in life and who doesn't want to support that?

While purchases may be well integrated into our day-to-day, mindless consumption doesn't need to be. It's time to realise the power of our purchases! In fact, every single day we vote with our money for the kind of world we want to be a part of.

Now, it would be naive to say that buying things is going to save the planet; it won't. However, it would be equally naive to resign ourselves to inaction. Unless you live completely off-grid - buying things is an inevitable fact of your existence. If we have to be consumers, why not vote with our money like we mean it and buy from businesses and people who prioritise our planet's health? Why not boycott companies that engage in unethical, unsustainable practices? why not support local, environmentally-friendly businesses that genuinely care about making the world a better place?

It is important to remember that conscious consumerism is not about perfection. Don’t be so hard on yourself, just simply be open to beginning. Ireland will not be a better place by a few people living a perfectly sustainable life but by millions of us trying sustainability imperfectly. We at TEM also wish to point out that the most sustainable product is the one you don’t buy. We at TEM always advocate to first choosing to reduce, reuse, recycle, and re-love! These are the kind of environmental habits meant to help limit the amount of waste we create from consumption. Each practice helps people prevent waste and pollution, save energy, and conserve natural resources to protect the environment.

Sometimes simply not knowing where to start, can be the only thing standing in the way between you and real change! The Earthy Marketplace is here to make shopping with the Earth in mind a whole lot easier!

At The Earthy Marketplace, we feature three main cohorts of business:

1. Shop Sustainable - A broad range of sustainable businesses Including but not limited to, for example, businesses in areas such as Refillery Zero Waste, Fashion, Children’s toys, Accessories, Beauty, Art, Crafting, Household items, Furniture, etc.
2. Farm Finder - Independent Growers selling seasonal, organic produce of the plant variety.
Farming organically means anyone respecting the principles, rules, and requirements of organic farming.
3. Earthy Eats - Food places catering 100% vegan or offering vegan options as part of their regular menu.
The term food places can refer to a broad range of businesses that prepare and serve/deliver food to customers. Including but not limited to, for example, Restaurants, Café, Bistro, Food Truck, Bakery, etc.

We are not a directory - meaning we do not claim to or aim to have every related business listed on our Site, however, we do aim to provide our users with a broad and diverse range of businesses and organisations providing some of the best conscious alternatives and Services Ireland has to offer, together in one place and unlike anywhere else currently available, so that we can be the best possible resource to help the Irish public on their journey towards living more consciously.

Discover monthly/weekly or daily special offers, promotional offers/discount codes, etc., or perhaps even grab some delicious discounted produce. If it’s a bargain you’re after, this is the place to be!
★ Earthy Notices to discover jobs and volunteering roles. Looking to volunteer or find a new job position? Here is the place for our many TEM Businesses to let the public know they’re in search of volunteering roles, job vacancies/or hiring for particular positions within their establishment. We believe that there is currently no one place to find specifically local, sustainable, and/or plant-based jobs/volunteering roles in Ireland, so we decided to go straight to the source and give TEM businesses that place to advertise collectively as a community!
★ Earthy Events to check out upcoming events to plan your weekend activities! Here you can find any upcoming free public events being hosted or attended by The Earthy Marketplace community for example; a sales event, a market, a tour (of the farm e.g.), an opening event, a swapping event, a clean-up event, sea swim event, community event, a family event, seasonal event or any creative activity you can think of really!

In addition;

Earthy Friends - At The Earthy Marketplace we're all about promoting a more conscious lifestyle and all that encompasses, therefore, we have decided to provide a space on TEM for all conscious/environmental NGOs, charities, and not-for-profit groups and organisations, to help raise awareness of the important work being done across Ireland. We wish to offer our Service as a means to help raise awareness of these amazing organisations that do so much. We aim to support them by advertising their events and required volunteering roles etc. and assist them in whatever way we can as members of our growing conscious community. By expanding our community in this way we hope to become an even greater resource as a whole to the Irish public. We wish to offer our Services for free to these great organisations and groups who give so much in an earnest fight to create a better world for us all.

Last but certainly not least;

We plant trees!
The Earthy Marketplace is a resource hub with a drive to connect our national community, while also giving back to nature directly. Of course, we plant trees! we love nature! Shop with us and help in our mission to restore biodiversity and help to reforest and rewild Ireland. We believe that to begin to tackle the biodiversity crisis and climate change, we need to start thinking differently and collectively. That is why, every month, with the help of our friends over at the tree planting initiative, Reforest Nation, we have decided to ensure that a percentage of our service fee goes towards planting native Irish trees every month. None of this would be possible without the generous contributions from many of the wonderful businesses that make up The Earthy Marketplace community. Keep your eyes peeled for our native tree icon(s) which will be displayed in the listing galleries of those amazing businesses that decided to participate in our tree-planting mission! Our commitment to give back to nature in this way will contribute not only towards offsetting the carbon footprint of The Earthy Marketplace community but will also aid biodiversity and help to reforest and rewild Ireland!
